What is a CSA?
The idea of community supported agriculture (CSA) originated with a community's desire to support local agriculture. A farmer grows shares of produce, fruit, or other agricultural products, in our case finished wine. Shares are purchased before the growing season and the community and farmer shared in the risks that came with agriculture. They also shared in the joys of locally grown fresh products.
WHY does lost acres vineyard have a Csa?
We are committed to sustainable farming in the Granby countryside. Our CSA is part of our effort to create and sustain an enduring relationship between community members and our farm winery. The wine we make is a local agricultural product and with our wine we contribute to the preservation of local agriculture heritage in Granby. We grow about 50% of the grapes that go into our wines. Owners, Kevin Riggott and Michelle Niedermeyer live in the community. Our CSA fits the intention of supporting local agriculture, good local food, preserving local farms and decreasing our carbon footprint.
Is Lost Acres Vineyard CSA right for me?
This question is answered with several other questions. Do you like wine? Do you like supporting local agriculture? Do you enjoy the viewing of art and the listening to music in a beautiful country setting? Are you interested in learning more about wine, and getting a behind the scenes view of grape growing and wine making in general, and Lost Acres Vineyard specifically? If the answer is yes to these questions, then the CSA is right for you!
What are PICKUPS AND are they different from distributions?
Pickups are the distribution method for the Lost Acres Vineyard CSA. The terms pickup and distribution are used interchangeably. Three times a year, Lost Acres CSA members can visit the winery and vineyard to pick up their CSA share (8 bottles of wine per pick up).
What is my risk in joining Lost Acres Vineyard CSA?
The risk is minimal. In our model, we have already grown and harvested the crop, so we know we are going to make wine. The only risk is if a bottling is delayed or we determine not to bottle a particular wine. In this case we will substitute another wine of equal value.
WHAT DO I GET FOR MY MEMBERSHIP?
CSA members receive two cases of wine (24 bottles) at a 25 percent discount in addition to a 20% discount on all additional wine purchased throughout the year.
How much does CSA membership cost and when is payment due?
The total cost of a Lost Acres Vineyard CSA share is $400 which includes sales tax and your CSA discount on wine. To secure a spot in the CSA, a $100 deposit is required and is typically made the fall/winter prior. Two additional payments of $150 are due during the spring season on April 1 and June 1.
Can I select the wines in my CSA share?
The short answer is yes. While the winemaker will select wines to be in each of the distributions, members can substitute wines if they prefer. Any differences in cost will be billed or credited in at the final distribution.
