Stop and smell the roses” is what they say. As we go about our lives, surrounded by familiar items from day to day, we tend to take many of those things for granted. We forget to really notice them, as well as the where, when, how, and why. Maybe it’s that old rusty wrench that Dad used to fix your bike. Perhaps it’s a cookbook containing the best apple pie recipe that your Grandma used to bake for you, or the first baseball game you attended. It is my hope to elicit such memories in time through my paintings.
I would classify my approach to painting as a loose form of realism. If the viewer can recognize my image, I am successful. If my painting evokes a memory it’s even better. I choose to paint still lifes as it suits my inner control freak. I like the ability to set up a stage with consistent lighting and a model that does not move once in place. My choice of subject matter is usually one with nostalgic value that resonates on a universal level. After a lifetime of working in a variety of mediums, I have found that oil paints are the perfect medium with which to express myself. Whether I am using a brush or palette knife to apply the paint, I am always enamored with the range of colors and texture that oil paint provides. |
